Hyundai Recalls 94,622 Vehicles Over Fire Risk: Owners Urged to Park Outside

Alex HessBy Alex HessOctober 16, 2026No Comments6 Mins Read

Hyundai has announced a major safety recall affecting 94,622 vehicles in the United States after identifying a potential fire hazard involving front power seat motors.

The issue could cause certain vehicles to catch fire even when they are parked and not being driven.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall affects selected Hyundai Genesis and Genesis G80 sedans manufactured across several model years.

The announcement, reported on October 15, 2026, has raised safety concerns for owners, particularly because the automaker is advising affected drivers to park their vehicles outdoors and away from buildings until repairs are completed.

Which Hyundai and Genesis Models Are Being Recalled?

The recall covers certain vehicles from the following model years:

    • 2015 Hyundai Genesis
    • 2016 Hyundai Genesis
    • 2017 Genesis G80
    • 2018 Genesis G80
    • 2019 Genesis G80
    • 2020 Genesis G80

A total of 94,622 vehicles are potentially affected across the United States.

However, not every vehicle from these model years is necessarily included. Owners should check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) through the official NHTSA recall database to determine whether their particular vehicle is affected.

The recall is registered under NHTSA campaign number 26V664000.

What Is Causing the Fire Risk?

The problem involves the front power seat adjustment system, a feature designed to help drivers and passengers adjust their seating position electronically.

According to recall information, the seat adjustment control switch can become damaged or dislodged when subjected to external force.

When this happens, the switch may remain engaged even after the occupant stops adjusting the seat or leaves the vehicle.

As a result, the electric motor responsible for moving the seat could continue operating longer than intended.

Prolonged operation may cause the motor to overheat, potentially creating a fire hazard.

What makes this defect particularly concerning is that the overheating risk is not limited to situations when the vehicle is running.

A fire could potentially occur while the vehicle is parked, making the issue relevant even to owners who do not drive their cars frequently.

Have Any Hyundai or Genesis Vehicles Caught Fire?

According to reporting based on the recall documents, Hyundai has identified two alleged fire incidents in the United States associated with the issue.

However, no related crashes or injuries had been reported in the United States at the time of the recall announcement.

Although the number of reported incidents is relatively small compared with the total number of recalled vehicles, the potential consequences are serious enough to warrant a safety recall.

The recall is intended to address the defect before additional incidents occur.

Hyundai Advises Owners to Park Outside

One of the most important aspects of this recall is the precautionary advice being given to vehicle owners.

Hyundai is advising owners of affected vehicles to park outdoors and away from other vehicles, buildings, and structures until the necessary repairs have been performed.

This means owners should avoid parking affected vehicles inside attached garages or close to their homes.

The recommendation is particularly significant because the potential fire hazard can exist even when the vehicle is not being driven.

For owners who regularly park inside residential garages, following the manufacturer’s guidance may require temporarily changing their usual parking arrangements.

When Will Hyundai Fix the Problem?

As of October 15, 2026, Hyundai was still developing a remedy for the affected vehicles.

The company has not yet announced a completed repair procedure for this recall.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed beginning December 7, 2026. These letters should provide further information about the recall and the steps owners need to take.

Recall-related repairs will be provided free of charge once the remedy becomes available.

In the meantime, affected owners should continue following the outdoor parking recommendation.

How to Check Whether Your Vehicle Is Recalled

Hyundai Genesis and Genesis G80 owners can check their recall status through the official NHTSA website.

Step 1: Find Your Vehicle Identification Number

Locate the 17-character VIN, usually found on the driver’s side dashboard near the windshield or on the driver’s side door jamb.

The VIN may also appear on vehicle registration and insurance documents.

Step 2: Visit the NHTSA Recall Website

Go to https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls and enter your VIN into the recall search tool.

The database allows owners to check for open safety recalls associated with their vehicles.

Step 3: Review the Recall Information

Look for recall campaign number 26V664000, which relates to the front power seat overheating issue.

Hyundai identifies this campaign as recall number 308, while Genesis uses recall number 035G.

Step 4: Contact the Manufacturer or Dealership

Owners who discover that their vehicles are affected should contact Hyundai, Genesis, or an authorized dealership for additional guidance.

The relevant customer service numbers are:

    • Hyundai Customer Service: 1-855-371-9460
    • Genesis Customer Service: 844-340-1200

Owners should not wait for a notification letter before checking their recall status.

Why Vehicle Recalls Matter for Used Car Buyers

This recall also highlights an important consideration for Americans shopping for used vehicles.

A vehicle may appear mechanically sound during a test drive while still having an unresolved safety recall.

For example, a used Genesis G80 might have a functioning engine, comfortable interior, and properly operating electronic features, yet still be subject to an outstanding manufacturer recall.

Because some defects are not immediately noticeable during normal driving, checking a vehicle’s recall history should be part of the used car purchasing process.

Before buying a used vehicle, consumers should verify its VIN, review outstanding recalls, and ask whether any required safety repairs have been completed.

This is especially important when purchasing older vehicles that may have changed owners several times.

What Should Hyundai and Genesis Owners Do Now?

For owners of the affected models, the immediate priority is determining whether their vehicle is included in the recall.

Drivers should check their VIN using the NHTSA database rather than assuming their vehicle is safe simply because they have not experienced any problems.

If their vehicle is affected, they should follow Hyundai’s recommendation to park outdoors and away from structures until the recall repair has been completed.

Owners should also monitor official manufacturer communications for updates on repair availability.

There is currently no need to assume that every Hyundai or Genesis vehicle has this problem. The recall concerns specific vehicles and model years.

Nevertheless, the potential for a fire while parked makes this a safety issue that affected owners should take seriously.

    Final Thoughts

Hyundai’s recall of 94,622 vehicles serves as a reminder that even relatively small electrical components can create significant automotive safety concerns.

In this case, a malfunctioning power seat control switch could allow an electric motor to overheat, creating a potential fire hazard whether the vehicle is moving or parked.

For owners of 2015-2016 Hyundai Genesis and 2017-2020 Genesis G80 models, checking their recall status should be a priority.

Until an official repair is available, affected owners should follow the manufacturer’s parking precautions and stay informed through Hyundai, Genesis, and NHTSA.
