Motorcycle Safety Tips To Protect Yourself From Negligent Drivers

Anita GinsburgBy Anita GinsburgOctober 24, 2015No Comments3 Mins Read

Some people believe that motorcycles are vehicles to be avoided due to overwhelming safety risks.

While motorcyclists know that this is definitely not a steadfast rule, the naysayers are right to be weary of motorcycles to a degree.

Motorcyclists face more statistical risk every time they hit the road than automobile drivers do. However, these risks can be reduced if motorcyclists follow a few rules and guidelines.

Here are how motorcyclists can reduce their risks of accidents, especially at the hands of negligent drivers.

    Always Wear A Helmet

It’s a sad but true fact that many motorcyclists fail to wear a helmet when they ride. Some think that helmets won’t save them in the event of an accident, while others think that helmets make them look “uncool.” Helmets can reduce fatality risk in the event of an accident. Always be sure that both you and any passengers you might have are wearing helmets every time you go for a ride.

Have The Right Kind Of License

If you are involved in an injury-free accident, you may feel lucky. However, if you don’t have the right type of license, you could be in for a world of legal trouble. Never hit the road unless you’ve obtained the right license that you need to ride. Not only will the right license protect you from legal trouble, but you’ll gain useful safety knowledge during the licensing class. For more info on motorcycle license requirements and guidelines, look online for resources.

    Never Drink And Drive

It should go without saying, but never drink alcohol before riding. Many motorcyclists erroneously think that drinking and driving their bike is somehow different than drinking and driving a car. At the end of the day, it isn’t. You risk causing a wreck that could be fatal to you, your passenger and to pedestrians or those in the vehicle you collide with.

“Dress For The Slide, Not For The Ride”

This fun little saying should be every motorcyclist’s catchphrase. Don’t get on your motorcycle wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Instead, wear sturdy denim or leather. There’s a reason that the “stereotypical biker” is seen in jeans and leather chaps. These are fabrics that will protect you from road rash in the event of an accident.

Motorcycles can be relatively safe if you’re well-educated about safety. If you follow these guidelines, you’ll reduce your risk of injury and protect yourself in the event of a collision with a negligent driver. Motorcycle safety tips can help you avoid injury and be more confident on the road.
